What to Do When Wind Uplift Forces You to Make Roof Repairs

There are a lot of environmental factors that can damage roofing materials and the wind is one of them. But it isn't just high winds blowing on top of the materials that can be a problem, and it doesn't take hurricane force winds to do roof damage.

There's something called wind uplift that can be very damaging for a roof. So damaging that roofs are designed to have a certain level of wind resistance to protect the roof structure. You can't control the wind, but you can protect your roof from it.

Has wind uplift damaged your roof or the supporting structure?

What Causes Wind Uplift

Wind uplift isn't about wind speed. The issue has to do with air pressures around the roof.

It happens when wind flow is parallel over the roofing material, which creates low pressure while the air beneath the roof has a higher pressure. This difference in air pressures creates a negative suction effect and there's a strong upward force from below.

Problems Caused by Episodes of Wind Uplift

As the name suggests, wind uplift can do serious damage to a roof by actually lifting the materials up from the roof deck. When the wind forces the roofing to lift up it can:

  • Rip off shingles and panels
  • Tear and damage roofing materials
  • Damage the underlying structure
  • Cause structural failure

Wind uplift can impact all types of roofing, including metal roofs with panels. No matter what type of roofing you have, the areas prone to wind uplift are the corners of the roof and the edges.

How to Correct and Prevent Damage Caused by Wind Uplift

A roof's wind uplift resistance is a measure of how well it can handle different wind pressures. Various factors go into the measurement including the roof deck, height of the structure and terrain around it. The edge detailing also makes a difference in how well a roof handles negative pressure created by the wind.

All of this is so important it can influence building codes and requirements for a roof. Here in Texas where a strong wind can blow through at just about any time, you'll want to pay careful attention to your roof's wind uplift resistance. If it isn't up to par or edge lift has already occurred it's time to shore up your roof so it's secure.

  • Contact a Professional Roofer to Fix the Damage

If winds cause uplift damage you'll need to contact a roofer immediately. This is a serious issue that can lead to substantial damage. In addition to the damage that the wind uplift may have already caused, there's a good chance an underlying structure issue made the roof vulnerable in the first place. Those issues will need to be addressed as well so the problem doesn't happen again.

  • Securely Fasten the Flashing

One primary reason that wind uplift happens is because the flashing around the edge of the roof isn't properly secured in place. When that's the case, the wind is able to push under the flashing and force it up. Your roofer should go around the entire edge of the roof to securely fasten the flashing in place.

  • Seal Up Seams That Catch the Wind

When the seams of the roof aren't properly sealed this can also lead to wind uplift. In addition to securing the flashing, your roofer should seal around the edges to keep the wind from pulling the roof up.

  • Use High Quality Asphalt Shingles and Metal Roofing

Roofing materials that are thicker and stronger will hold up better in windy conditions. In particular, if you are replacing a metal roof, opt for a thicker gauge metal to help prevent the problem.

When wind conditions cause damage to properties in Central Texas, locals know they can rely on LOA for help. We are experienced roofers that offer a full selection of roofing services including wind uplift repair after a strong wind blows through.

"I got three inspections and decided to use LOA Construction for a new roof. LOA’s Dan Harvey worked with my insurance inspector to make sure all the hail/wind damage was accounted for, gave us a good choice of shingle colors, and was great at communicating. The workers did quality work, found and repaired rotted wood and cleaned up. Highly recommend!"

"Brandon at LOA construction made replacement of our roof very easy. He was the only roofing contractor that I could find that would work directly with our insurance company. They showed up on time and made the whole process very easy. And we have a great looking high quality roof! I Would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a new roof. Give them a call if you need a roof or think you might have wind or hail damage. I had several other bids that were higher cost and didn't think our insurance would cover it. Our insurance did cover it, I think they were just unwilling to work with the insurance company. Not Brandon, not only was he will to work with our insurance he met with the adjuster and made the whole thing a breeze. Thanks again LOA and Brandon!!!!"

LOA Construction has exceeded my expectations again. This is the second roof installation with them and I couldn't be happier. Specifically, Tyler Griffiths is professional, attentive, and made the entire process of working with my insurance company effortless. My tenant sent a glowing account of their experience as well. Knowing it was a rental, they still diligently protected all property and plants. They were on time every time and went out of their way to not inconvenience the residents. LOA Construction has integrity and takes pride in their work. I couldn't recommend them more.

As a first time home owner with no experience in how to make claims and start the process of getting a new roof I was scared to the point of avoiding what needed to get done after the bad hail storm. August Walker did an amazing job walking me through each step along the way. He answered all my questions and calmed my concerns. They inspected my roof and drove from Austin to Belton just to be there with the ins inspector, and followed up with me in person after the roof was installed. He also made a special trip back to drop off samples! I’m grateful to August and LOA construction for being highly professional and friendly!
