Signs and Solutions For Improving Roof Insulation Problems

A well insulated roof will keep the inside more comfortable and reduce energy bills at the same time. Insulation is so important the federal government and state governments offer rebates and incentives for property owners that add insulation.

However, you have to make sure that things are done right or you won't enjoy these benefits. A poor insulation installation will do the exact opposite, and that can cause problems for your roof as well.

Issues Related to a Poorly Insulated Roof

A well insulated roof will help control the flow of warm air and cool air in a structure. While the roof is able to keep most of the heat and cold air out, some of it will penetrate through into the attic space and eventually the rest of the home or building. Insulation helps to prevent unconditioned air from impacting the spaces below that are being regulated with a heating and cooling system.

There are two types of insulation that need to be installed correctly around the roof: attic insulation and roof insulation. Attic insulation is within the attic space in general, whereas roof insulation is applied directly to the top of the roof deck during roof replacement or a new roof installation. There is also insulation that can be applied directly to the underside of the roof deck.

If insulation is inadequate you'll notice some issues that can create big problems.

  • Higher Energy Consumption

The most obvious sign that you have insulation issues is high utility bills. If you're having to constantly run the HVAC system to keep it comfortable inside it's a sign insulation improvements are needed.

  • Mold Growth From Condensation

Home insulation of all kinds helps to keep the temperature inside regulated and constant so it doesn't go from hot to cold as conditions change outside. Going from hot to cold isn't just uncomfortable. It creates condensation that can lead to unsafe conditions inside. A damp attic is the perfect breeding ground for mold growth that can spread to other areas of the structure.

Top Causes For Insulation Problems

There are three primary issues that lead to insulation problems around the roof:

  • Not Enough Insulation

When there isn't enough insulation, or none at all, you aren't going to get the full effect. It may insulate some, but not as well as if there was an adequate amount of insulation.

  • Inadequate R-Value

R-value is a measurement that indicates how well a material or product prevents heat from getting through. R-values range from 8 to 60. The higher the number the better the material insulates. The density, thickness and type of material all play a role in R-value. If you choose insulation with a low R-value it may not be adequate for the structure.

  • Roof Leaks

A roof leak is a major problem for a lot of reasons. One problem many homeowners don't consider is the damage a leaking roof can do to the insulation on the roof and in the attic space just below. Insulation is not going to be effective if it gets wet. It's just one more reason why regular roof maintenance that checks for leaks is so important.

How to Correct Improper Roof Insulation

There's one surefire way to correct improper roof insulation - install adequate insulation. If you are replacing your roof or installing a new roof, you can easily add roof insulation between the roof deck and the roofing materials. But there are some things to consider when you're choosing roof insulation.

Know What R-Value is Appropriate

There are two considerations when you're deciding which R-value your insulation should have: where the structure is located and where you're putting the insulation. Energy Star has created a useful map with the recommended insulation R-values for different regions. Here in Central Texas the recommendation for attic spaces is to have an R-value of 38-49 depending on whether or not insulation already exists.

For roofs the recommendation is to use insulation with an R-value of 30-49 or even up to 60 depending on the location.

Decide What Type of Insulation Will Work Best

At one point the vast majority of insulation was fluffy fiberglass that was rolled out onto the floorboards of the attic. Today, there are more options that can offer better insulation in more places around a home or building. The type of insulation also influences the R-value range. Common insulation options include:

Blown-In Insulation - This is the most affordable but has the lowest R-value. It's a loose material that sits on the floor of the attic space.

Spray Foam Insulation - Spray foam is a mid-level insulation product that can be applied to the underside of a roof without vents.

Perlite Boards/Foam Boards - This type of insulation is more rigid and can be applied to the top or underside of the roof deck in the attic space. It has the highest R-value per inch.

Make Sure the Insulation is Properly Installed

Even if you choose the right R-value and type of insulation for your attic and roof, you can run into issues if it isn't installed correctly. Proper insulation installation is going to depend on the type of insulation that you're using.

Roof insulation that's applied above the roof deck should be done by a professional roofer. This will ensure that the roof deck isn't damaged in the process and that the roofing material is properly secured.

At LOA we provide roofing solutions and general construction services that will make any property more comfortable and secure. If you need help with your insulation installation in the Austin, TX area, give us a call at 512-375-3654.

"I got three inspections and decided to use LOA Construction for a new roof. LOA’s Dan Harvey worked with my insurance inspector to make sure all the hail/wind damage was accounted for, gave us a good choice of shingle colors, and was great at communicating. The workers did quality work, found and repaired rotted wood and cleaned up. Highly recommend!"

"Brandon at LOA construction made replacement of our roof very easy. He was the only roofing contractor that I could find that would work directly with our insurance company. They showed up on time and made the whole process very easy. And we have a great looking high quality roof! I Would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a new roof. Give them a call if you need a roof or think you might have wind or hail damage. I had several other bids that were higher cost and didn't think our insurance would cover it. Our insurance did cover it, I think they were just unwilling to work with the insurance company. Not Brandon, not only was he will to work with our insurance he met with the adjuster and made the whole thing a breeze. Thanks again LOA and Brandon!!!!"

LOA Construction has exceeded my expectations again. This is the second roof installation with them and I couldn't be happier. Specifically, Tyler Griffiths is professional, attentive, and made the entire process of working with my insurance company effortless. My tenant sent a glowing account of their experience as well. Knowing it was a rental, they still diligently protected all property and plants. They were on time every time and went out of their way to not inconvenience the residents. LOA Construction has integrity and takes pride in their work. I couldn't recommend them more.

As a first time home owner with no experience in how to make claims and start the process of getting a new roof I was scared to the point of avoiding what needed to get done after the bad hail storm. August Walker did an amazing job walking me through each step along the way. He answered all my questions and calmed my concerns. They inspected my roof and drove from Austin to Belton just to be there with the ins inspector, and followed up with me in person after the roof was installed. He also made a special trip back to drop off samples! I’m grateful to August and LOA construction for being highly professional and friendly!
