Why You Want to Make Sure Tree Limbs Are Cut Back

It may not seem like the trees on your property can damage the roofing system, but if a storm causes damage or strong winds blow through it could easily happen. And roof damage is just one potential problem.

There are many reasons why it's a good idea to keep large trees cut back and maintained:

  • Falling branches are a serious safety hazard that can cause an injury.
  • Overhanging limbs can create too much shade on the roof, which encourages moss, mold, and mildew growth.
  • Other property damage is possible from a fallen tree, including structural damage.
  • Tree debris can collect around the foundation of the structure.
  • Tree debris on the roof can cause water drainage issues.
  • Proper pruning is good for a tree's health.
  • Keeping tree debris off the roof extends the life of roofing materials.
  • Proper maintenance is needed for an insurance company to cover tree damage.

Avoid tree damage of all kinds with roof maintenance services from LOA!

"I got three inspections and decided to use LOA Construction for a new roof. LOA’s Dan Harvey worked with my insurance inspector to make sure all the hail/wind damage was accounted for, gave us a good choice of shingle colors, and was great at communicating. The workers did quality work, found and repaired rotted wood and cleaned up. Highly recommend!"

"Brandon at LOA construction made replacement of our roof very easy. He was the only roofing contractor that I could find that would work directly with our insurance company. They showed up on time and made the whole process very easy. And we have a great looking high quality roof! I Would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a new roof. Give them a call if you need a roof or think you might have wind or hail damage. I had several other bids that were higher cost and didn't think our insurance would cover it. Our insurance did cover it, I think they were just unwilling to work with the insurance company. Not Brandon, not only was he will to work with our insurance he met with the adjuster and made the whole thing a breeze. Thanks again LOA and Brandon!!!!"

LOA Construction has exceeded my expectations again. This is the second roof installation with them and I couldn't be happier. Specifically, Tyler Griffiths is professional, attentive, and made the entire process of working with my insurance company effortless. My tenant sent a glowing account of their experience as well. Knowing it was a rental, they still diligently protected all property and plants. They were on time every time and went out of their way to not inconvenience the residents. LOA Construction has integrity and takes pride in their work. I couldn't recommend them more.

As a first time home owner with no experience in how to make claims and start the process of getting a new roof I was scared to the point of avoiding what needed to get done after the bad hail storm. August Walker did an amazing job walking me through each step along the way. He answered all my questions and calmed my concerns. They inspected my roof and drove from Austin to Belton just to be there with the ins inspector, and followed up with me in person after the roof was installed. He also made a special trip back to drop off samples! I’m grateful to August and LOA construction for being highly professional and friendly!

Roof Replacement FAQs

Roof Damage From TreesFAQs

  • Does property insurance cover tree damage?

Whether or not your homeowners insurance company will pay for roof repairs after tree damage is questionable. It comes down to what caused the branches or tree to fall. Most homeowners in Texas have an insurance policy that covers tree damage caused by high winds, hail damage or lightning. But if poor maintenance or rotting was a contributing factor, then the insurance company may refuse to correct the roof damage.

If the insurance policy covers tree damage it applies to the roof repairs as well as additional home services such as fence repair and repairing gutters.

  • What happens if a neighbor's tree branches are over my roof?

Overhanging branches from a tree on your neighbor's property is a little trickier to deal with. The local laws will come into play, but in just about all cases the neighbor needs to cut the tree branches back if requested because it's a liability for you and your insurance provider. The property owner where the tree is located is responsible for any damage that the tree does to your property.

However, getting your neighbor to pay for damage from their tree limbs could be difficult. For that reason, you have the right to cut your neighbor's tree branches back to the property line if they don't do it themselves.

  • Will cutting back branches affect tree health?

When done correctly, tree trimming should not harm young or mature trees. At LOA we follow all of the proper procedures for preventing disease and pests when we're cutting back tree branches.

  • What if a tree is right next to the structure?

How things are handled is going to depend on how close the tree is and if it's already damaging the foundation. Tree removal is recommended anytime a tree is right next to a structure and causing damage of any kind. If you want to avoid removing trees they will need to be cut back substantially and regularly maintained to prevent roof damage.

If you are planting trees keep the root structure in mind as well as the canopy size. Planting 8-20 feet from the structure should be a safe distance depending on the size of the tree.

  • How can I prevent a tree falling on my roof?

Routine maintenance is the best way to prevent tree damage of any kind. How often you have to cut large branches back varies by the species of tree, but count on trimming trees at least a few times a year.

If it appears that the tree is diseased or dying you may need to call in a tree expert known as an arborist to assess the tree's health.
