Types of Roof Damage

Your roof should be able to withstand the forces of the Austin, TX weather for many years. A typical roof has a lifespan of about 25 years. However, even a newer, properly installed, durable roof can be damaged by wind, hail, rain, and the blistering summer heat. Some roofing materials are more easily damaged by storms, hail, and wind than others, but no roof will last forever.

Regular maintenance will help protect your home for the long term and reduce the need for extensive roof repairs or replacement services. Some common types of damage our team at LOA Construction commonly find in the Austin area include:

  • Broken, missing, or loose shingles. Strong winds, falling branches, and hail can break or rip off shingles, creating openings that allow water to enter the structure.
  • Exposed nails or staples. Exposed roofing nails and staples often rust and deteriorate over time, creating tiny openings that allow water to drip into the structure, causing damage to the structure over time.
  • Damaged flashing. Metal flashing creates a water barrier beneath the roof shingles. If the flashing or the flashing tar was put in place years ago, incorrectly installed, or has deteriorated due to weather, it can lead to a dangerous roof leak.
  • Punctures and cracks in roof tiles. Punctures and cracks can be caused by storm damage, left after removing a satellite dish, or a poor roof installation. Punctures and tears in the underlayment, flashing, and moisture barriers on a home roof can cause damage to the structure that will require a more extensive repair.
  • Poorly installed roof. A roof may have been installed improperly, leading to a shorter roof lifespan, leaks, and missing or damaged tiles.
  • Screws backed out. Over time, the nail or screws that secure the roof tiles or shingles can back out, leaving the roof vulnerable to leaks, lost or damaged tiles, and other problems.

What Our Roof Repair
Clients Have to Say

Working with Kevin from LOA was a great experience! I needed my roof immediately! My insurance company was trying to non renew simply due to the age of my home. They gave me no time. Kevin and the LOA team worked so quickly and had my roof installed the next day. They were very professional, did a great job cleaning up after and picking up most all the nails. Highly recommended!

I highly recommend working with LOA Construction. I shopped around before picking a roofing company and LOA provided the best overall responsiveness and price. Cameron Smith and his team were helpful and communicative leading up to, during, and after the job. The roof looks great and I'm confident in the workmanship. LOA also performed repairs and house painting, both of which we are very pleased with.

— Chris Farrow

LOA Construction has exceeded my expectations again. This is the second roof installation with them and I couldn't be happier. Specifically, Tyler Griffiths is professional, attentive, and made the entire process of working with my insurance company effortless. My tenant sent a glowing account of their experience as well. Knowing it was a rental, they still diligently protected all property and plants. They were on time every time and went out of their way to not inconvenience the residents. LOA Construction has integrity and takes pride in their work. I couldn't recommend them more.

As a first time home owner with no experience in how to make claims and start the process of getting a new roof I was scared to the point of avoiding what needed to get done after the bad hail storm. August Walker did an amazing job walking me through each step along the way. He answered all my questions and calmed my concerns. They inspected my roof and drove from Austin to Belton just to be there with the ins inspector, and followed up with me in person after the roof was installed. He also made a special trip back to drop off samples! I’m grateful to August and LOA construction for being highly professional and friendly!

Roof Repair FAQs

Roof Repair FAQs

  • How to repair a leak in the roof?

Have a leaking roof? The first step to patching a roof leak is to locate the source of the leak, checking for any signs of roof penetrations around plumbing vents, roof vents, or chimneys. If your plumbing vent boots or roof vents have any cracks or broken seams, replace with a new vent boot. For more complex leaks, contact a professional. More info here on roof leak repairs and cost.

  • How to repair shingles on roof?

First, you should assess the damage and see if the moisture barrier or flashing is no longer keeping out moisture. If it's not, you'll need to replace everything in the square around that area. Tools you'll need include a pry bar, nails, a hammer, utility knife, and flat-head screwdriver. First, lift with the pry bar and don't damage any surrounding shingles. Next remove the damaged shingle, and install the new shingle, aligning it correctly with the other shingles. Then, seal it well.

  • How much does it cost to repair a roof?

Depending on the extent of the leak or the damage, the cost to fix a roof may be anywhere between a couple hundred dollars to several thousand dollars. The most extensive repairs may end up requiring a full replacement. More information here on whether you should repair or replace your roof.
